Project

Lofoten Kelp Forest Carbon Programme
MCC-2024-0012·Methodology MCC-010·Norway, Nordland

Large-scale kelp aquaculture and biochar conversion project along the Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway. The project cultivates sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) across 2,400 hectares of permitted ocean space, harvesting annually and converting biomass to biochar through pyrolysis. Expected to remove 18,500 tCO2e annually with 1000+ year permanence through biochar soil application.

Position statement. Credits are issued and retired under the Marine Conservation Credits Programme's contribution-first framework (MCC-800). Retirements support verified marine conservation outcomes; they do not represent carbon offsets, neutrality, or emissions reduction claims.

Verification chain. Each credit traces back to an independent VVB-verified monitoring period, a methodology-approved quantification, and a governance-approved issuance. Continuous Sentinel-2 monitoring detects habitat reversals; affected credits are quarantined under MCC-700.
